Whenever,
interviewer asks to write minimal test cases, one should ask for BRD or
Acceptance Criteria.
Once, the interviewer
gives a green signal to frame high level scenarios without requirements’
specification, one should think of following test scenarios:
Test cases for Lift:
- Capacity of the lift
- Usability (whether its easy to operate or not)
- Functionality( whether it functions properly or not)
- Comfort (whether a person is comfortable in it or not)
- Height
- Weight
- Volume
- Time it takes to reach every floor
- Test for maximum capacity of the lift
- Test for more than max capacity
- Check the working in case of a power failure
Sometimes,
they do ask for negative test cases also. So, here are the negative test cases which I had mentioned during my interview:
- Enter more than the specified person
- Smoke or lit fire inside the lift
- Try opening door while moving.
- Press stop before the destination.
- Press opposite button from the source eg. if on ground floor press down button and vice versa
- Bring obstacle when lift doors are about to close.
How to judge the maximum no of Test cases? Like if the interviewer asks you how many test cases can you write for the functionality of a Lift?

Well, Niti, It's a good question. My approach would be I will go through the user story/CR and prepare a draft version of traceability matrix on the basis of requirements which would give me a minimum number of test cases, that I can think of that time. (For More Details read, http://cracksoftwaretestinginterviews.blogspot.in/2014/02/33-rtm-requirements-traceability-matrix.html)
ReplyDeleteIf interviewer asks this with respect to any particular scenario, it's better to confirm the fixed requirements and let him know your 'traceability matrix approach'. Hope,it helps.
It does, thanks.
